Those of you who didn’t grow up in the 1980s and have somehow avoided watching “Road House” on television in the three decades after it was released may be wondering what all the fuss is about with this film.
That question was answered by Patrick Swayze in the original film, who starred as Dalton, an enigmatic, tough-as-nails big city “cooler” (which is just a fancy term for a bouncer) who is lured to a small town in Missouri to clean up a particularly rowdy roadside watering hole (which is just a fancy term for a bar).
Once in town, Dalton discovers that the work is more difficult than he anticipated since a malevolent local tycoon who controls the majority of the town’s commercial dealings (Ben Gazzara) is dissatisfied with the way he conducts himself. In the ensuing chaos, Dalton and his new brawling barroom companions are pitted against a veritable who’s who of small-time hoods in order to keep their hopes of achieving booze-house stardom afloat.
Yes, the film is frequently every bit as ridiculous as the synopsis suggests. Swayze and everyone else involved (particularly the rarely better Sam Elliott) give it such evident affection and steadfast commitment that it’s nearly impossible not to be swept away by its charms.
