The Falcon and The Winter Soldier : Plot | Cast | Platforms

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is an American superhero action drama TV series that is based on Marvel Cinematic Universe comics characters.

The most unlikely of the Avengers, Sam Wilson a.k.a The Falcon and Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier team up to save the world from a potential threat as well to protect Captain America’s legacy of righteousness. Their journey is presented in Marvel’s miniseries THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER.

Not a lot was seen of Sam and Bucky in the movies and quite understandably, most of the scenes and attention were meant for Marvel giants like Tony Stark and Rogers, and Thor. At least now, with this new venture, the viewers finally get a chance to observe and understand the characters of Sam and Bucky.

The characters of Falcon sam Wilson and Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes have been a part of Marvel’s universe for quite a long time. Therefore it was only a matter of time that they had their show. With the launch of this show, these characters finally have a chance to present themselves as individual persons.

The Plotline of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

The series starts after Captain America is not here anymore and Sam, his trusted friend, returns the Vibranium shield, not knowing what to do with it. Bucky, on the other hand, lives in another part where he is trying to get accustomed to a normal eventless life.

At this juncture, a series of incidents makes the two worst-matched people come together to salvage the crisis.

The characters of Falcon sam Wilson and Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes have been a part of Marvel’s universe for quite a long time. Therefore it was only a matter of time that they had their show. With the launch of this show, these characters finally have a chance to present themselves as individual persons.

The series offers a different side of the characters: the human side. This is a story of two soldiers who never came home from war and their experiences and actions have changed them as people, permanently. They are left with no choice but to learn to live with what they have become.

A New Captain America

Though Sam donated Captain’s shield to the museum, he thought he didn’t deserve to have it. He secretly never believed that he could be as good as Steve was.

Neither Sam nor Bucky could predict that Steve’s mantle will be passed over to someone else to promote the idea of another -American Hero. John Walker is chosen to be the new Captain America. Walker, without even realizing it, becomes a part of the White Supremacy promotion.

Appearance-wise, John Walking has strong similarities with Steve Rogers. In his mind, he is the real  Captain America, the exemplary Patriotic Soldier. He doesn’t think he is simply a replacement for the previous one, but rather he is the original one. Apart from this superiority complex, what boosts his confidence is his exceptional paramilitary skills.

John Walker’s character is pretty faultless. His vendetta, his rage and his demand for his r respect make him a fearful person. The hero turns into an Anti-hero.

Wyatt Russell has done a brilliant job as John Walker. Though he remains a victim of an oppressed system, he wins our hearts, without a shadow of a doubt.

Helmut Zemo is back.

The most unexpected twist of the series is that Helmut Zemo is back. Remember the guy who successfully dismantled the team Avengers from within in Avengers: Civil War?  He is back and well, he is dancing(!). He is supposed to team up with Sam and Bucky to help them solve the brooding crisis regarding the  Flag Smashers.

As we see the former Sokovian Intelligence officer, we immediately remember he lost everything and his family simply became collateral damage in the war that had nothing to do with them.

We can’t help but wonder, can this man ever get past what he has gone through? Why will he get involved in a fight yet again that isn’t his own? This series aims at answering these curious questions.

The Power broker.

If you’re Super-surprised to find out Zemo is back, you will be happy to know Marvel has another unexpected character re-entering their Universe. Remember Sharon Stone? She is back too.

Sharon Stone, the great-niece of Peggy Carter (Steve Rogers’ only love interest and one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D), is another example of collateral damage. She has always remained loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D and always had Steve’s back. This tells us how very crucial she was all along.

Here, gone is the idealist girl who used to fight for righteousness. Now she is a power broker who fights for her survival. Her perception of the world has changed completely. She stands as a symbol of people who lose things in the crossfire and yet pays for the sins of others.

The Story of Isaiah Bradley

The story of Isaiah Bradley is one of the unique addition to the series. This fragile old man stands as a symbol of unimaginable horrors unleashed on the black men and how things still managed to remain the same, even after such a long time.

The horror of war surpassed Isaiah as his entire life was a nightmare. He was one of those soldiers who were experimented on for enhanced physical powers. The Soldiers were used as guinea pigs. When the news of horrible and unethical acts get known to people, the site was burned down, overnight, to erase the evidence. On top of that, Isaiah’s friends are being killed off as they too were evidence. After giving everything up for his country, he got nothing. The hatred and Racism continue to prevail.

Isaiah tells the stars and stripes don’t mean anything to him. He has fought his battles long enough to know that Black men will never get honour and Sam should never become the next Captain America.

America as well as the World’s obsession with a White hero with blue eyes who comes as a saviour is something they will never let go of.

Sam Wilson a.k.a the Falcon

Episode 6 of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier ends with a major climax in the story

Sam Wilson used to work as a test pilot for a pararescue project called Exo-7. After his friend Riley’s death he left his job and came back home. At this point, he meets Steve Rogers and they bond over their bitter experience of war. Later, we find that Sam becomes one of the closest friends and a trusted companion whom he has always counted on.

The series focuses on Sam and Bucky’s life in a world that does not have Steve Rogers anymore. At the very beginning, we see Sam returning the shield which symbolizes he is still mourning and cannot accept a Captain America free world. His giving the shield also implies that he doesn’t consider himself worthy to have the shield.

The first season focuses on Sam coming to terms with who he is and Steve was right about him. Here, we also get to see Sam as a normal person, with a family to take care of. His meeting with Isaiah is truly a scene worth remembering.

The series has bravely picked up the topic of racism and heroism and how they don’t go hand in hand. The obsession with a blue-eyed, blonde, white hero is not easy to replace with something different.

Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier was the bumpiest road for the MCU

After Steve’s death, Bucky is shown to live a quiet life. His past deeds still haunt him and there is simply no escaping from the horrors he unleashed as the Winter Soldier.

Bucky’s character evolves in a way we would not have expected. His guilt and pain are incisively expressed in the series. His repressed anger finally vents out and we get to see a Bucky who has been sad and mentally wounded and friendless for way too long.

Through this journey, Bucky finds something worth holding onto and he needs it now more than ever.

The Cast of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

The brilliant cast of the show presented a master performance, as expected. The dynamics between Sam (played by Anthony Mackie) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) is something that feels real. Adepero Oduye, as Sam’s sister Sarah, is credible. Emily Vancamp seems comfortable in her role and Florence Kasumba, as Ayo, shines in her light.

This miniseries, consisting of 6 episodes in season 1, is directed by Kari Skogland. Kari Skogland has previously worked as a director for shows like Empire and The Handmaid’s Tale. Her filmography also includes another Marvel Studios project: Captain America and the Winter Soldier.

Conclusion

The Falcon and the Winter soldier are pretty different from other Marvel series. The series presents more than a storyline. It has done its best to explore the complex layers of ideas and agendas behind the glorified Title of a hero.

The show attempts to show the vulnerable people behind the mask of a hero who was given a choice in the first place. Later, they simply become either a threat or collateral. Not everybody’s life turned out to be like Steve Rogers.
