Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is an upcoming anime series based on the light novel series of the same name. The series follows the story of a 34-year-old NEET who is reincarnated into a fantasy world as a baby. Due to his genetic factor and early training, Rudeus becomes highly skilled at magic. During his childhood, he becomes a student of Roxy Migurdia, friend to Sylphiette, and teacher to Eris Boreas Greyrat.
Shortly after, a teleportation catastrophe scatters many people around the world, and Rudeus resolves to escort Eris home. During his journey, Rudeus receives advice from the mysterious Human-God and befriends Ruijerd Superdia. Successfully escorting Eris home, a misunderstanding with her leaves Rudeus heartbroken.

In the Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation light novel series, the story follows a 34-years-old unemployed otaku. He reaches a dead end in his life & decides to change his life. But suddenly, he’s run over by a truck & instantly dies.
Then comes another shocker. He’s now reborn in a strange new world of Swords & Magic into an infant’s body. With the memory of his past list, he has got the identity of Rudeus Grayrat.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Review
As an entry in the modern isekai genre, Mushoku Tensei falls short in terms of storytelling, in particular pacing and world-building. It’s hard to care about the rather shallow and bland characters.
The characters are difficult to relate too and both their interactions and behaviours are at times hard to believe– they also don’t seem to matter to the on-rails story to begin with. It plays the stereotypes and tropes of the genre entirely straight but somehow manages to feel patchy and disjointed nevertheless.
I get the feeling this is another example of a work that is best appreciated somewhere inbetween the novel and adaptations, but neither rendition will really stand on its own– an unfortunate reality of so much isekai. Every plot device is a “deus ex machina”, which is really quite unfortunate, and I’m guessing there will be tons of plot armour as the action picks up.
It is on the other hand quite a popular release, especially among younger readers. For readers who are looking for a no-frills, played-straight iseaki without any twists or complications, it might make for a good page-turner over the summer holidays.
However, for veterans of the genre there really are no redeeming qualities beyond the acceptable artwork. That being said, there are definitely much worse examples of terrible storytelling in isekai out there, but if you’re expecting an interesting fantasy world or a new take on the isekai premise, this is definitely not it.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation was first introduced in April 2014 as a light novel series. Then because of its increasing popularity, it was adopted as manga series. Kadokawa’s Comic Flapper magazine published the first magazine in October 2019.
As of October 2018, the novel & manga series sold a combined print of 2.2 million copies in Japan. That’s not it.
Its novel series ranked #8 in the 2019 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! tankōbon list. These stats are limited to Japan only.
