Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” books were previously adapted by “Independence Day” director Roland Emmerich and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan among others before showrunner David S. Goyer’s “Foundation” TV series was developed. When “Foundation” Episode 1 debuted, it was the culmination of a project that had been in the works for some time.

A mathematician who invents a branch of mathematics he calls psychohistory theoretically capable of foretelling the future is at the heart of “Foundation,” a struggle that has raged for thousands of years. This narrative is told from the eyes of only a few major people in Goyer’s TV series rather than the historical viewpoint provided by Asimov.

Apple renewed the series for a second season just weeks after its launch, which is great news for both longtime fans of Isaac Asimov’s works and newcomers to the plot. So far, here’s all we know about Season 2 of “Foundation.”

Foundation Season 2 Release Date

At its vast size, “Foundation” Season 1 filming began in early 2020, making it the largest production ever filmed in Ireland (via Deadline). However, the “Foundation” set had to be shut down midway through production due to pandemic safety precautions, before picking back up again in October of that year (via Independent.ie).

In the end, less than a year after production started, “Foundation” was released in theatres in September of 2021.

The release date for Season 2 of “Foundation” has not yet been announced by Apple. If the relatively rapid turnaround time — excluding the pandemic delay — between shooting and the release of the show’s first season remains true for Season 2, the show’s second season might be completed in a year or less after its filming finishes.

As a result of this, Apple has not yet announced when it would begin filming the second season of “Foundation,” which means that it is unlikely to broadcast until sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

Foundation Season 2: Cast and Characters

Despite the fact that his presence is fleeting depending on what he perceives to be his role in preventing the fall of the Galactic Empire at any given moment, each of the heroes of “Foundation” is connected in some way or another to mathematician Hari Seldon, who appears in the film in a number of different roles (Jared Harris).

Although his disciple Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) is now in cryostasis, she acts as the season’s narrator and first point of view character, all but ensuring that she will return in season two. Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey), a Hari Seldon disciple, plays an important part in the first season of “Foundation,” and it is likely that they will reprise their position in the second season.

Dawn (Cassian Bilton), Day (Lee Pace), and Dusk (Cassian Bilton) are the leaders of the Galactic Empire, which is commanded by three clones of the old monarch Cleon I who are various ages (Terrence Mann). The trio’s presence has stayed consistent throughout the series, even when the episode’s Day of the pilot episode transitioned into Dusk.

Finally, considering her position as the one constant during the rule of innumerable Cleons, Eto Demerzel (Laura Birn), the emperors’ secretary and apparently only remaining robot in the cosmos, should also make her appearance.

Given the fact that the events in the “Foundation” novels take place over the course of centuries, it’s probable that “Foundation” Season 2 will introduce a number of new characters as well. The identities of those characters, as well as when they could appear in the series’ narrative, will remain a mystery until Apple formally announces the future season’s cast.

Foundation Season 2: Plot

Foundation Season 2

Season 1 of “Foundation” is nearing its conclusion when we learn that two different versions of Hari Seldon are in play: a digital upload of his consciousness on an orbiting spaceship charged with founding a new Foundation on Hari’s home planet of Helicon, and the version of himself revealed to be hiding in a Vault near the original Foundation on Terminus.

It is expected that the narrative of “Foundation” Season 2 would be built on the two Foundations, each of which was formed in order to offset the Empire’s impending demise, as foreseen by Hari Seldon’s psychohistory.

Additionally, the original Foundation has now been strengthened by the purchase of the starship Invictus, which is believed to be one of the most powerful weapons ever created in the history of mankind. According to Hari Seldon’s orders, this will just be the first ship of a much bigger fleet of ships to come.

The architects of the Empire, on the other hand, have discovered that Day and probably even Dusk are not exact clones of Cleon I, laying the stage for an investigation into the validity of their genetic dynasty to be a significant storey element in Season 2.

The last episode of Season 1 ends with Gaal Dornick and Salvor Hardin meeting on Gaal’s home world of Synnax 138 years in the future, hinting at an alternate scenario for the next season. Hari Seldon predicts that the Empire will eventually collapse, and this will bring about a tremendous cosmic upheaval for these and other individuals in the near future.
