James Gunn’s challenge
The movie is crucial because in choosing this movie, Gunn has chosen a piece that already has a predecessor. So a comparison will be in order.
But Gunn himself has said this movie is neither a reboot nor a sequel to the previous one. In this movie, he simply has explored his s and approaches.
Gunn has been treated with absolute freedom from his producers and was allowed to use his creative license to its fullest capacity. He jokingly said that he was allowed to ” Kill off anyone ” he wanted to.
The second challenge for Gunn is to manage, organize and execute with such a long list of characters. The group is always going to clash within its members as they all are a rainbow of personalities.
Till now we knew Harley Quinn is the craziest of all. But now, having met the rest of the teammates, we are not sure anymore. Now we have Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, King Shark and Polka dot man. David Dastmalchian is blown away by the way his character was drawn by Gunn. Initially, Irish Elba was supposed to play Deadshot. But later on, his name was changed to Bloodsport. This keeps it the option of Will Smith returning as Deadshot.
The Peacemaker’s character is going to be our centre of attention. Gunn has loved experimenting on this character and has already an upcoming show on HBO Max on this Killer who kills to maintain peace.
G for Gore
This movie by Gunn is filled with violent deaths and lots of gore and guts. There is a lot of suspense surrounding this trail of bodies(read severed heads/other body parts). Since Gunn was given the full license to kill off anyone, he seems to exploit his freedom. A lot of major characters die in this movie. And we have no idea who. Anyone could be blown off at any point. That’s what makes it such a real and unpredictable journey.
David Dastmalchian, who plays the Polka dot man, has said the following to Collider
“It’s James unbound…It’s not like he’s making an R-rated movie, he’s making just the movie that’s in his mind. And then they’ve taken the cuffs off, in the sense that it can be whatever it’s going to be…lives are actually on the line, and the stakes are life or death.”
Margot Robbie’s challenge
Margot Robbie is one of the most talented actors of her time. She has become one with Harley Quinn in her portrayal of the role. We simply cannot imagine someone else who would be better suited for this role. When she first played the role of Harley Quinn, fans were simply amazed. This exactly what they were looking for.
Though her last venture, Birds of Prey has not received much acclaim either by comic book fans or by critics, Gunn’s movie will offer us the chance to remember and view Robbie’s powerful acting. Robbie’s talent has been experienced before when starred in movies like Bombshell, Wolf of the Wall Street, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and many more. This movie allows her a much–deserved a chance to show what she is truly capable of.
The Joker will be missed
Gunn has admitted that the character of joker will not be there in this movie. It is not surprising because Joker isn’t part of the original DC comic series.
